make my day, pilgrim
diane is the assistant to the president of the company i work for.
she's a cute little lady with an even cuter jamaican accent (which i thought was
irish or canadian or something when i first met her... i was waaay off). i
was in a cubicle right next to hers until i got promoted to my current position,
and she came to rely on me for help with all her computer issues, so i still get
occasional calls for help from her. when she called me last monday, i
thought she just needed help formatting a table of contents or something, but i
was wrong. she actually wanted to know if i was available to have lunch
with lou, the company president, on wednesday.
as far as i was aware, lou doesn't take employees out to lunch regularly, so i was a little surprised. she didn't tell me what the lunch was for, so
for two days the reason was left to my imagination. i won't say what
reasons my mind came up with because, well, sometimes i forget what a wild
imagination i have until i let it go, and it comes up with stuff that is just
crazy (i just realized that i'm speaking of my imagination as if it is an entity
of its own and not something i control... that makes a lot more sense to me than
that it's me coming up with the craziness), but as it turned out i was wrong
again. it wasn't anything weird or exciting. he just took out a few
of the newer employees to get to know them a little better.
so anyways, at some point in the course of the lunch, it was my turn to sum
myself up, past, present, and future, in 5 minutes or less, and when i got to
the future part, i actually found myself with something fairly specific to say
about my plans for the near future (that being the next few years). this
was a big surprise to me because i didn't theretofore consciously have any idea that i had
these plans... and the even bigger surprise was how much sense they made.
i am currently very pleased with my subconscious and also measurably relieved.
on a totally different note, the other day jeff's roommate was flipping
through channels, and i saw an old movie my mom likes - an old western movie
called mclintock! when she questioned me as to why i knew what this
movie was, i said in my defense, "it has that 'make my day' guy in it."
then the guy i was talking about came on and she was like, "that's not clint
eastwood. that's john wayne," and laughed at me. i felt a little retarded.
so then just minutes later she was still flipping through channels and came
across mrs. doubtfire, and the line mrs. doubtfire said right then
was (i kid you not), "i thought i saw clint eastwood. that would make my
day."
freaky, eh?
